Artist Biography:
Brenda Mabel Reid (they/she) is an emerging artist and designer based in Kitchener. Their practice includes textiles, sculpture, printmaking and installation. They currently work out of their studio at the KW Artist’s Co-op where Brenda’s practice explores ideas around care politics, community and architecture. They regularly engage textiles as a medium to explore both softness in care and engage with historical political care spaces. Their work is often collaborative and engages with the public, including the recent community pandemic quilt “From Behind The Mask,” with nearly 600 participants. This project received the Joy Experiment Award in 2021 and was featured on CTV National News.
They earned a bachelor’s (2019) and a master’s degree (2021) from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. Brenda has been engaged in teaching and research work at the University of Waterloo and works as an Artist Educator at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. In their short career so far, Brenda has participated in two collaborative residencies, received several grants, exhibited in group shows, a two-person exhibition, and a travelling exhibition. Their first interactive performance artwork is debuting in the exhibition Journey With Our Kin this fall at Cambridge Art Galleries.
