Technique

Screen Printing

Also known as silkscreening or serigraphy, screen printing is a versatile technique that's great for posters and paper prints, as well as a wide variety of textiles and apparel.

The process begins with preparing an image on transparency film — either hand-drawn or digitally printed. That film is placed over a screen coated in photo emulsion and exposed to light, hardening the emulsion everywhere except where the image blocked it. The screen is then washed out, leaving behind a stencil of the design.

To print, the screen stencil is placed over a surface and ink is pushed through the mesh with a squeegee to transfer the design. Each colour is applied with a separate screen, allowing for vivid, multi-layered prints with bold colour payoff and sharp detail.
