Stitching a Line Thru Media

Stitching a Line Thru Media was a three-year, interdisciplinary project presented by Centre[3] between 2019 – 2022. This initiative brought together artists and scholars from Canada, the United States, and Europe to explore the intersections of textiles, media art, and cultural identity.

The project unfolded through three thematic exhibitions:

  1. Interweavings (2019): This inaugural exhibition examined the convergence of handmade and mechanized textile production, delving into cultural practices and the pervasive influence of technology in daily life.

  2. Remediations (2021): Focusing on the evolution of technology through textile art, this exhibition featured works that addressed both contemporary digital platforms, such as e-commerce sites and dating apps, and earlier technological developments like television. The artworks highlighted how technology is both shaped by and shapes those who engage with it.

  3. Transpositions (2022): The final exhibition showcased innovative textile productions utilizing technological materials—such as wires and cords—as mediums. Artists employed these materials to convey cultural significance and narratives through textile design.

Through these exhibitions, Stitching a Line Thru Media illuminated how textiles and media art can intersect to express themes of nostalgia, identity, and cultural transformation, challenging traditional boundaries between craft and contemporary art.
